Many thanks! If there is a pinhole would that be evident by loss of fluid? I don't seem to be losing any, so am guessing there might be a problem with the seals on the master or slave cylinders?

It's possible that you are loosing fluid into the clutch housing. It will travel along the push rod and could find its way onto the clutch plate.  This could turn out to be expensive. It's probably worth checking this out.

I hope not! Fortunately I haven't yet seen any fluid loss. My thinking is to replace the piston assembly in the master cylinder and if that doesn't work then replace the slave. I will check out internet prices then compare with the dealer price. If the slave was leaking wouldn't there be a point where the leak would be visible?

Hi Doug Bwucie and I had a look at the parts fiche on http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com  and got an idea the problems are not cheap master cylinder, lines, and slave or output cylinder they call it. I am sure the bleeding you have done will have absolutely removed all the air that is not there from a seal or line breach.

If I need an online alias I guess I should revert to the nickname Halibut that I acquired pulling tuna off the Oregon Coast in the 1970's. I have browsed Beemerboneyard and Motorworks, and found the latter to be cheaper with their lower shipping costs. It's like Mexican beer being cheaper than than Mac's.I have ordered a new piston assembly, reservoir diaphragm and bleeding nipple (ouch), so going by previous experience the parts could be here by the end of the week. Then I need to improve the seal on the mityvac reservoir so I can get more pressure to overcome the resistance of the check valve when pressure bleeding.  Thank you for your comments.

The new piston assembly is fitted and it all works. Thank you to the contributors who provided assistance, hope to see you in Nelson sometime or elsewhere.

I am glad you've managed to sort it. I've just fixed a troublesome starter motor with a new one :-).
