Hi. I've recently purchased this bike with 75,000kms.  I'm very pleased with it but am concerned by quite a loud rattle which I think comes from the clutch.  It is only noticable at idle and disappears when the clutch lever is pulled in.  Any help or advice fron Airhead owners would be much appreciated. Thanks

hi, it's been a while but as far as I remember I had the problem once and it was a bearing on the push rod mechanism which idles loosly in neutral and makes that noise, but when you pull the clutch in you put pressure on it to separate the clutch and the noise goes away I replaced when I put a new clutch plate in, not 100% sure but iwould check that out first.good luck just passed my old workshop manual on to Mr Kokopelli

The rattle you speak about is generally caused by wear of the splines on either the clutch plate or the gearbox input shaft or both. It is normal practice to lubricate the splines around once a year. If this is done from new the rattle takes a lot longer to develop, but as it is a bit of a major to do many owners either don't know how to or don't bother if they do. It is unusual for the splines to wear so badly they no longer engage but it has been known to happen on high mileage poorly maintained BMW's. Most of the older boxers do it to some degree.Steve.
