I understand there are different ways of doing this, some good others not so good.  If I wanted to get some headers and mufflers redone what do I need to look out for? Any advice or better still any good platers in Auckland.Malcolm

Malcolm,Eden Electroplaters, in Khyber Pass, across the road from the (gag) Harley shop have a pretty big reputation for bike and car parts, with various coatings and finishes, polishing, and so on and so forth.  You'll remember the late Mr Freddie Ullness and his always shiny rims?  That was them.

I think Eden Electroplater is either Closed down or Moved to new location ,,,not longer in Kyber pass currently Eden Building is occupied by Harleys....

Thanks guys, that gives me something to work on.  As I clean up this machine i'm finding a few things that could do with re chroming.  Gear shift lever, brake lever, etc etc etc mirror stalks are so bad I think replacement will be required.  So I'll take stock when I've identified the bits I think should be done and see about getting them done altogether.  Realised the exhaust system is not chromed so i'm getting into it with a 400 grit sanding disc which rips the stuff off in no time after spending hours with 0000 steel wool  😆  and getting nowhere slowly.

I posted a reply last Friday Malcolm but had to leave it halfway through (work you know !!!) and finished it a couple of hours later but obviously it is lost in ciberspace.Basically I met up with a friend of mine who is a chemist specialising in electroplating chemicals and he said that a duplex system is the best and in his opinion the top guys are Wanganui Electroplaters  or Gisborne Electroplaters who both use this system.There is also Otahuhu Electroplaters who use a single system which in his opinion isnt as good.I did have names of contacts but cant remember them (age you know) and also Gisborne Electroplaters are also under another name now.I have no doubt google will be your friend but if not let me know and I will give my friend a call.Jim

Good one Jim, I'll keep that in mind.  At present I'm trying to deal with the exhaust system which fortunately is Stainless but still taking a hell of a lot of work to get out the corrosion.  Had a smile at the old priest joke too  😆 Chris and Shane what a couple of dorks eh.

A quick word to the wise, dont use steel wool on Stainless steel 😀Any work done on stainless should be done with tools only used for stainless, files etc. The reason for this is that Stainless will rust if it is contaminated with any low grade steel (eg steel wool) Hate to see all that hard work polishing go to waste  😮

Too late I'm afraid  😕 unfortunately i'm not so wise because I started with steel wool so I guess the best I can now do is to try to give the whole shooting box a real good clean out.  Maybe a careful blast with the water blaster then a good scrub with a stiff brush.  Then I'll squirt plenty of WD 40 in the nooks and crannies and keep my fingers crossed.  Bummer I should have waited for the feedback.

All is not lost Malcom, dont sweat it to much, just make sure you use a good grade of metal polish to finish off and you should be ok (sounds like the steel wool you used was a fine grade so may not have contaminated the Stainless to deeply) If you ever need to wire brush it make sure you use a brush with bronze wires.Best way to polish it is to buy a buffing wheel that can fit in you drill and Stainless Polish. Then never use it to polish steelGood Luck  😀
