Leaving the Northbound Motorway Service Centre at Dairy Flat, 0930 OTD.This is a fairly long ride for this time of year, so we will be limiting the length of our smoko breaks.

Some great roads and not much traffic apart from when we had to use SH1 at times. Mokaba Cafe by the Whangarei town basin did a very good job of the food. A total of 408kms door to door for me which is a good distance. Obviously longer for those who live south of the kotanga. Good to see most of the regulars and a few new faces for me. After pestering me to let him be TEC from the moment he joined the ride, I finally relented and let Herr Red Baron take over that highly responsible role from Whangarei. Within 5 minutes he had lost 2 people! Bloody careless really. And by the way Grant, most of us didn't want to leave you in Whangarei. It was Bwucie's idea. Hope that you'll forgive us and come along next time.A bit of a scare for Jason today when his flash new pony started leaking . . . . . rain water. Another case of Herr Red Baron causing trouble. A great effort by Paul with only 9 1/2 fingers. It looks like his next bike might need only 3 gears. Seems he he doesn't need the others now.

Must admit however to prefering the old Rob – you know that nice fella that is often first to volunteer for TEC duties on his R1200C. This new fella >:( had it in for us right from the Brynderwyn intersection.Herr and Frau Baron
AnonymousGuest24/04/2011 at 10:05 amPost count: 2134Mmmm, yes, as Rob observed, we had a visit from the Cock-Up Fairy today, about which more, anon…..But first, we left Dairy Flat with both Rob and Tony on time, in fact both early. Nurse Wendy suggested feeling their foreheads to check for fever. The ever willing Rob volunteered to be TEC, and he was the man for the job today. He had made his choices from his two big wardrobes, and selected the F650 from the bike wardrobe and a jacket, from the biker wear wardrobe, with brilliant yellow colour patches on the shoulders and arms, which I could see way back down the road in my mirrors: if you can see TEC, then you know all is well between the pair of you. So today his acronymic RIC cap stood for Resplendent In Colour. We chuffed off up SH1, with the statutory dogleg through Orewa around the toll camera gantry, to a brief stop for a stretch at Wellsford, then onto Brynderwyn to pick up Team Red Baron, ex overnight at Langs Beach, and Anne and Ray Cotterill, from Whangarei, who joined us as "native scouts" for the loop back to their 'hood. We had another stretch on the roadside at Dargaville.
We take Jason, our human egg-timer with us because nobody else smokes. When he's done with his durry, five minutes is up.
From the outskirts of Dargaville to Tangiteroria we got our only real rain of the day, which had me backing off the pace a bit and thinking, "Yes, Miranda, the front tyre is getting a bit tread deficient," but once through that the roads were mainly dry again. The Town Basin was as good as it always is: I reckon it knocks spots off the Big Smoke's Viaduct Harbour as a lunch venue, and there is always something to look at in the Basin, whether it be working vessels or lived in vessels, or gin palaces.
After lunch we farewelled the Cotterills, said ta-ta to John and Cindy on the Rockster, and Campbell on his Hoooonda, all heading back via SH1, and the rest of us headed for fuel and a rendezvous with the above-mentioned Cock-Up Fairy. One bike went to a different garage, then as we left town, I zigged when he'd zagged, they spotted us crossing the end of the road and shortcut over the hill to catch us, we spotted them and stopped to wait. Good news is, Grant, Gail and Beemer got home fine, pedalling along in front trying to catch us up, and we got home tootling along waiting for them to show in the mirrors. Oops! Again!Still, we enjoyed a blitz around the Waipu Mangawhai Loop, and our ice cream at Orewa. I can think of many worse ways to spend a Sunday.
AnonymousInactive25/04/2011 at 4:35 amPost count: 182Sorry I couldn't come out to play this week boys and girls,I am currently on deck building duty in the back yard, I have lots of projects to catch up on after swanning around on two wheels all summer enjoying myself.however as I knew you were all heading north I did extend an invitation to attend the Mended Drum for a hot cross bun and a cuppa on the way back which Team Foley and Team Red Barron accepted.Nice to see you all and it gave me a much welcome break from the tools...I think if you hadnt have come I would have carried on by floodlight and gone to bed much more fatigoooed.I have to go and do some alterations to my friends heating system in Hamiltoon next Saturday and as he is a Master brewer I am thinking temptation may result in a night under canvas on his back lawn....with a late start back home on Sunday morning to avoid blowing up the alcmometer when Mr Angry the traffic cop pulls me up, for having a dirty number plate or a wrong coloured tyre. So I will make my appologies now for not being on parade again next week.I look forward to reading the ride report though Bwucie.Regards RincewindCatch you later
