I have been overwhelmed with material for the February Newsletter (GOOD problem!!) and have had to swing the axe heavily. Peter Nash had sent me a December Area Report which I put on the spike: shouldn't have. It includes an account of Stephen Oatley's use of a SPOT device while he's touring.[hr]WellingtonThe monthly ride for December was the Xmas BBQ at Kaitoke Regional Park at the northern end of the Hutt Valley on Sunday 13 December. This outing was attended by 25 members and all had a good time even though it was a bit breezy. The BBQ area has to be booked and we had it from 11:00 to 15:00 it has 5 large electric BBQs and 8 large picnic tables the site is covered so the weather is not an issue. The cost is $1 per head for the use of this facility and it is certainly value for this small amount of money.The steak, sausages and salads were enjoyed by all and feedback has been positive particularly for the Christmas cake made by Jenny Nash. The December members get together at the Petone Workingman’s Club was well attended and included 2 new members Kevin Baker and Neil Barrowman. The dinner was followed by a slide and video presentation by Stephen Oatley on his recent 19day Indian Motorcycle Adventure in Rajasthan organized by Auckland base Indian Motorcycle Adventures Ltd. This ride was on locally produced Royal Enfield’s which meant adjustment back to the old British set up of the brake and gear change on the opposite sides to the modern motorcycles. The roads were rough featuring broken seal, gravel and sand and chaotic road users however this was compensated by the interesting sites visited including the Taj Mahal and a snapshot exposure to the local life style and culture.Stephen loves his adventure riding and some of this is done on his own and for the peace of mind of his wife, Jenny, he wears a SPOT tracking device which allows Jenny to keep track of where he is via computer or I phone. Stephen and Jenny explained how this device worked, and its associated costs they also provide the website address http://au.findmespot.com/en/. This is a must have safety device for anyone who rides the back country roads alone whether in NZ or overseas.This was 2 very interesting presentations and Stephen admitted to having had a fascination for India aroused and indicated that he would like to see more of India in future as a tourist along with Jenny.    Peter Nash[hr]And Bwucie should have remembered, because he and the Librarian were at that meeting!
