As you are probably aware there is a Motorcycle Safety Levy applied to all motorcycle registrations. This levy is used to fund the Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council (MSAC) who have a web site at http://msac.org.nz/The site does not seem to be 'webmastered' very effectively. The News page does not contain links to the latest news items, and the comments section of the Instrumented Bikes page consists mainly of obvious spam posted during the last couple of weeks. However, the web site does give some insight into the work of the council, what you money is being spent on, and an opportunity to provide feedback. The link to MSAC has been added to the Links page on this web site.

I don't think many folk have a positive view on the work being done by MSAC. Which is a shame, as the people on it all mean well. It's a political football, given the funding comes from the ACC portion of the reg fee. It's too easy to bag them without knowing what they do.Just saying.

Daffy, you of most people would know that motorcyclists are a very individual bunch. Some are safety orientated, take a proactive approach etc. Others ride bikes for “fun” and see safety as “boring”.As such, trying to please a significant percentage of motorcyclists is always going to be a hard ask... Of course, if everyone sat around with a defeatist attitude... nothing would happen. However, adding some paint to roads and creating helicopter pads.... is it really the right approach? Landing pads are certainly more a bottom of the cliff approach rather than the top...

I attended a works hop recently for reading engineers. It was focused on how new reading projects can make it safer for bikes. MSAC had quite a bit of input to that. That's a small example of work going on that few are seeing. I totally agree Grem that there's a broad range of motorcycle demographics. It's hard to design a one solution fits all approach. Chipping away and taking opportunities where they arise is what they appear to be doing.I'd rather that $30 is ring fenced for something motorcycle related, if it weren't it would just disappear into the black hole that is the consolidated fund.

Yep, totally agree there (coz it's not like we can option out of the extra fee anyway). If they are assisting with new road design, the thoughts are being incorporated into the original structure, then that's definitely a good thing. I would imagine things like decreasing radius corners would be one of the things covered (ie, motorcycle ends up going in too hot). I think they've re-engineered some corners out Coromandel way, namely one set where there was a double fatal head on years ago (I was on that ride), so that sort of thing has excellent potential. So uh, can you ask them to take all the straights out of roads? I find them boring. Chur  ;D
