Turned out to be a very little run today: three of us bothered to “brunch” – Team Foley and Bwucie.  New Member Peter turned up, on a GS he's been riding for some time, but he's only just come over to the Dark Side and joined us.  And at nearly the last minute Campbell turned up, with his young fella, James, on the bungee behind Dad on a pretty little Hornet. We extricated Campbell and James from amongst the Ulybods waiting for the start of their run, and I charged outta the Service Centre at the head of our mini-group on Jean's Baby Burger, the b****y Eleven-Hundy Ess once again being in dry dock at Morningside waiting for Experience to find their Round Tuit and let me know what has gone rotten on my Frost Blue white elephant this time.  I do have to work the 250 scooter to save us from getting trodden on by Beemers behind, but at least I can ride the wee thing without sitting there wondering how long I have to go until the next breakdown - for me Suzuki have it all over BMW in that department.  Anyhoo, we headed for Piha for a cuppa, because it stood to reason that would be a pretty ride on a bright and shiny day.  Route was via Dairy Flat, Waitoki, Kaukapakapa, Helensville, Old North Rd, Taylor Road, Kumeu to Waitakere, where Campbell and James headed back to Town and other committments, the rest of us (all three machines!) took the (extremely) Scenic Drive route to Piha.  Just perfick, so it was, picture perfick.

There is also a very short and very poor video clip of the two Beemers climbing out of Piha here: http://s960.photobucket.com/albums/ae90/bwucie/Piha%20oldies%20littlies/?action=view&current=MVI_0076.mp4  This is the first time out for the new DSLR that replaced the one I had stolen, and I have much to learn about the HD Video capability in this new camera.  First two lessons learnt:

    • Use smaller file size
    • Use shorter lens

I'll catch up with the technology one year soon. After leaving Piha we all peeled off our own ways: hopefully we haven't put Peter off and we will see him on another ride soon.

Just so much to choose from and so many places to go.  Sorry we couldn't join you Bruce but we were booked for baby sitting weeks ago.  A couple of weeks ago I happened to mention to Kevin Sargent that we would be in the district this weekend and he invited us to join him for a paddle on Sunday 22nd so on Friday we headed off to Beachlands with the boats on the van.  Bright and early this morning we met Kevin and Karen with a handful of Auckland Canoe Club members along with BMWOR members Rob Hargreaves, and Gordon and Jill  at Cockle Bay. In the warm sunshine we prepared the boats and a small flotilla paddled across the bay and up the Turanga Creek to Whitford for morning tea.  Perfect, the day was warm and the water calm and in little more than an hour we were negotiating the mangroves to the boat ramp alongside the Cafe in Whitford.  I wonder how many other Auckland members paddle? this could be an option if we were looking for a change of pace sometime.Pictured Gordon and Jill in their collapsible Klepper double.P5220055.jpgRob H in front, Jean and Gordon and Jill. Neat, makes me regret again that I've sold my canoe. Those Klepper Kayaks have been around for a long time. I think they fit into a relatively small bag, but I wonder how hard it is to assemble one.

Apparently not too difficult Alex.  Gordon had his ready to go when we arrived at the beach.  He then took it to bits  in no time after the paddle.  Quite cute really. I should have mentioned that Kevin and Karen also paddle a Klepper and have flown it to Europe and paddled down the Danube.  I got a pic of them today but my intermittant hand shake spoilt the result  ;D

“I wonder how many other Auckland members paddle? this could be an option if we were looking for a change of pace sometime.”Well, me for starters, but my boats never get wet these days because I am forever plodding around in front of BMWOR.  I've made that smoko trip to Whitford a few times in the past.  Riverhead and Puhoi pubs are also good tidal prospects for a meal.If you want a plywood double sea kayak to replace your canadian, Alex, you could grab mine: I'd even shake the spiders out of it for you. 😮

Rob and I are planning a trip to the Riverhead pub by road to sample the new owners wares sometime soon.  Our place is a couple of minutes from Island Bay boat ramp and could be a starting off point for a paddle up there when the tides are right.  We'd even fire up the barby when we returned to make a day of it.  😛
