Hello AllIn the interests of combining a topic close to my heart (and hopefully yours) and finding an excuse for going for a ride................where is your best and worst pie shop located? I recommend “Kristy's Pies & Coffees” 166A Victoria Ave, Whanganui and “Stellar Nova Cafe” Seddon St, Raetihi. Both make their pies on site and they are larger than the norm starting at $5 each with tasty filling options. My worst would have to be the “Fat Pigeon Cafe” on the main road through Pio Pio. A regular size steak and cheese cost $7 or $7.50 if you want relish which turned out to be watties tomato sauce! Although the pie was made on site it was nothing special. Please enlighten me!!

Prior to the Alex rally a couple of years ago we watched the TV programme Hunger for the Wild which at the time was doing a show based around shooting and eating a deer.  The lads called in to a cafe on the main street of Mossburn called Bracken Hall where they make their own pies, the venison model got the thumbs up from Logan and Brown. As we were going to be heading south for the rally we promised to call in and try a pie.  We did and they beat the Venison pies in Te Anau hands down and having met the pie maker I can tell you she's a whole lot prettier than her counterpart in Te Anau.  Well worth the trip and we look forward to doing it again some day soon.

Having travelled New Zealand for about 10 years in a bus( Motor home) and eaten more pies than I care to think about. I would have to pitch for the pie shop/café, at believe it or not “Ruatoria”  East cape their pies are A1+ Regards Phil

Haven't been to Ruatoria for a long time Phil, but if this keeps building do you think we could get a “great New Zealand Pie Run” going?.  Could be on the road for a few weeks and get home needing replacement shocks  ::)

Sheffield in Canterbury. You can't miss it; they boast on the shop signage! Plan your route this way when you go to the Annual Rally next year.

I have a suggestion for the exec for the next Rally.  How about they ship in a couple of dozen pies from all the places listed here and we should have a best pie competition after the Gymkhana.  A few dozen beers from around the blocks would go down a treat as well.  Something like Clive does occasionally at the HAN. What do you think about that. ;D

If you like good old English pork pies try the Westmere butchers, her indoors bought some to compensate for her very expensive hairdo and they were delicious, best I've had in NZ or most in Pommie land for that matter

Best pies in the world……………easy………………..hands down……………….Point Hotel, Morrison Street, Edinburgh. Just east of Haymarket.Used to get a pie with mash, peas and gravy, and a pint of Guinness, for under 5 quid. 2001/2002, every Friday lunchtime with the lads from the office I worked in.It's a big commute though.

Pies keep us alive. Countless numbers of cold fingers resuscitated on winter rides. In the Mainland the Brick Oven at Rai Valley does an excellent mussel pie, also good pies are made in Renwick, but the best for me (so far) are found at the Cust Hotel- which is near Sheffield, so could they perhaps come from the same source? The story I heard from the publican at Cust is their pies are made by an ageing ex-British Army chef who is regarded with high esteem internationally and has cooked for the Queen.  Apparently he is now severely affected by arthritis but continues to make pies despite the difficulty of holding a knife.
