Every year the muppets from Fulton Hogan ( and others) reseal our road with crap coarse chip. Every year even before they have had a chance to remove their signs the surface begins to fail with pot holes forming. Also they tend to leave lots of loose chip all over the road; I think their plan is it slows the cars down? Council regs are they must sweep the road within 4 days of completing their work so far 2 months later they have "swept" it at least 3 times ; but they seem unable to remove the loose chip in corners, between the wheel tacks and on the centre line; exactly where we motorcylists tend to ride.Yesterday I came across a new "challenge" for us two wheel pushers. The roading contractors are "having a problem" with tar surfacing and creating slick spots that are very slippery. Out the back of Taupaki they have come up with a seriously half baked solution which leaves two strips where the tar has been stripped out. Problem is these strips are about 300 mm wide and do not deal with the whole "patch" so: if you are on the strip you are fine - if not and its wet say hello to the hedge. With all the noise being made about safety on Motorcycles is there not some obligation on the councils & NZTA to provide a consistent reasonably safe surface??
Just came back from RAG Rally at Pokaka and returning to Wellington, took the back road from Mangaweka through to Fielding. Some of the road was resealed between Mangaweka and Rangiwahia and was just as you say. Some shingle on the road; just enough to put a M/bike into a slide. Hard to see the gravel too. And I saw some of the potholes too. Somewhere else I can't recall.
So how did the RAG go Dave? the weather was pretty good for you. Unfortunately it coincided with another important weekend for us and we were being entertained by the NZSO at the Bruce Mason Theatre. The food wasn't quite up to Clifford's standards ;D but we didn't have to wash up afterwards, and the entertainment was excellent.
Malc, Was that the Churchill/Potts concert? The RAG was great. Got a small item for the Newsletter. Numbers were down - like the Annual Rally. But you know, for the people there they enjoyed it. Some of the team from Napier/Hastings, came over the Gentle Annie route. Weather was beautiful and for the riding to/from Wellington ditto.

It was a fund raiser for Christchurch. Organised by Elizabeth Marvelly with Paul Potts, Dame Malvina, Golden Horse, Ray Wolf, the Lady Killers, Gray Bartlett, Tim Beveridge etc etc. A really great line up of talent and the NZSO was in good form. Jude Bailey and John Hawkesby co compared the show which was packed out and raised something over $150,000 for the Red Cross.
