I have a 2002 R1150RT one of the first ones with servo assist ABS brakes the “brain” has failed BMW no longer supply that part the hole brake system must be upgraded to the mark two version at a cost almost as much as the bike is worth I am thinking on converting the bike to conventional brakes ie no servo assist or ABS  can it be done ? has anyone out their done this before? Is it just a case of getting mastercylinders front and back from an older model ? does anyone know what size “diameter” master I would need to control each brake any help would be appreciated Thanks Derek

Hi Derek try this link.http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=232002&highlight=servo+removal.If the link doesn't work you might have to sign up to the site, which is not a bad thing.I would imagine that the systems are very similar between a GS and RT.Adrian

Thanks Adrian Almost sounds to easy to be true hopping my RT is as easy as the U.K. model GS I have  a few nagging doubts on the U.K. GS servo assist ABS was an optional extra where as I think all the RT’s of that time servo assist ABS was standard I hope that doesn’t mean they used different components .Also worried about the size of the ressoviar on each master cylinder as with the servo assist removed it doesn’t look like there is much capacity on each master

I've had the servo assist + ABS removed from my 1150GS following a servo failure.  Used the same master cylinders, hoses changed for length reasons + brake light switch for the front brake required.  Before doing it I checked with a mate who had an 1150RT who had had it done.  Successful for him and just as successful for me.  While the brake feel is different there is tons of braking.  Big advantage is the weight saving having removed the servo unit, that weighs at least 5kgm and of course sits quite high being under the petrol tank.  Its been a winner for me.
