I have found that the Garmin maps are not exactly up to date even when you get the latest version. For users in NZ there is another option, that is completely free. The NZ OpenGPS map project has maps of NZ with routing information available for download. And as a user you can even help to keep these maps up to date by reporting any discrepancies you find, preferably with a log file. They don't work on all Garmin models, but they have worked fine for me on an older Nuvi and a new Zumo 660.Information at:http://nzopengps.org/Forum, including topics about map changes, at:http://gwprojects.org/forum/There's also a web site for updating points of interest, at:http://www.zenbu.co.nz/It would be practical for adding cafes and other interesting places not already there.

The only drawback with these mapsets is a major battle to install them without Windows and Garmin's software.  Not being very bright on the IT front I fake it by having XP in VirtualBox, and I've loaded the Garmin software on that. NZOpenGPS is always very much more up to date than the store bought maps.

I've found Garmin about 12 months behind on road changes which is not too bad at all.
