Hi target group  :-D,I am itching for a longer ride, have't been on gravel in ages and can't really risk a limp this close to the end of the year. Please let me know if there is any interestI am proposing a ride through the Motu to Gisborne and back via Waikaremoana. If this is too far we could just spend the night in Matawai and then ride back via the Gorge. To join you should have some gravel experience, if we're going the long way, otherwise it won't matter much. The Motu to Whakarau Rd section is just under 100km of gravel.  This will take about 3+ hours, once we reach Opotiki.  If we do the Waikaramoana Rd as well it's roughly another 100km of gravel. This should cure the itch. How say you?Better show you some of the scenery to help make up your mindDSC09272.jpgDSC09274.jpgDSC09278.jpgDSC09309.jpgDSC09285.jpgDid that help to make up your mind?

Good on you Alex – regret I won't be joining you this time as much as I would like to – did Clint's MMMMM ride at the begining of the month awesome – rode the Miningui Forest section in both directions on my 1150.The stream at the end of the Motu Road was dry when we came through - have fun cheers Stephen

Hi Aslan, hope all is well. I am not familiar with the Minginui Forest section. Is that the road out to the old town ship?

what about staying in Wairoa if you can put up with the antics. I always like staying at Mahia but it is a bit of a trip out that way.which way are you going from Matawai to waikermaona

I am open to suggestions. Why don't you come along for the ride? You know your way around there better than I do.

Day light savings kicks in the same weekend. I guess we'd leave 8 am to make there before dark. I am not worried about snoring, as long as I have plenty of ear plugs.

Good point, I had it in the title, but then changed my mind and was going to make it negotiable. By then of course I forgot. Altzheimers, I guess. Anyway, I suggest the 25th and the 26th of September. Could also be done the following weekend. Mrs Koko might stay at home for this one. It's a reasonable distance, so we'll have to keep moving on the gravel.

Hi Alex & Steve (+ others following this thread) – Alex you ask about the Forest Section – see Clint's narrative describing the MMMMM from KiwiBiker this year – I traversed the Forest Section in both directions – was guided back through on the Sunday by a couple of Taupo based KiwiBikers:Thread here http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=13648159#post13648159MMMMM Adventure Ride 2010Event locationBay of Plenty - TaupoThe world famous Minginui-Matawai-Motu Midwinter Madness Ride is on 30 July - 1 AugustThe plan is to meet up at the Rangitaiki Pub on the Napier-Taupo road. There is food, beer, basic cabins & camping there for those who want to arrive Friday night. Phone them on 07 384 2803 to book yourself a bed. More comfy accomodation, & extra bunks are also available 5km back down the road towards Taupo at the Rangitaiki Lodge. They have a couple of nice motel units, some tidy cabins & a bunkhouse. Call them on 07 384 2800 to book. As the Lodge bar usually closes at 8 the main gathering/meal/beers will be back at the pub.8am Saturday we'll leave the Pub & head North along the Waipunga Rd across to highway 38 at Minginui then on through Waikaremoana, Wairoa, Tiniroto & a few backroads to my friend's farm, Journey's End Station, out the back of Matawai. We'll stay in the shearer's quarters which are quite modern & well appointed. Bring your sleeping bag & a camp mat too, the beds are now all taken, anyone registering now will have to sleep out in the shearing shed, it's not too bad but bring a warm sleeping bag. If we are lucky Ann might even cook us dinner. Sat night Beer orders being taken now, $12 per 1/2doz Tui, send me a PM & bring cash. Sat night accomodation & meal koha is $25 cash.On the Sunday we'll head out to Matawai then off down the Motu Rd to Opotiki, then a couple more backroads & back to my place at Rotoiti.Any trailer scum planning to attend are welcome to drop their car & tralier at my place for the weekend. Further details will be added to this post as we get more organised.Remember this is a MIDWINTER ride. Based on previous MMMMM rides there is a 100% chance it will rain, a 66.6% chance of snow, an 80% chance it will be bloody cold & a 100% chance that all those mad enough to do the whole ride will have lots of fun. The route is all tar & gravel roads, nothing technical, some of the gravel is often fairly rough & muddy though.Distances:Taupo - Rangitaiki Pub - 35 km (no fuel)Rangitaiki Pub - Te Whaiti - 75km (no fuel)Te Whaiti - Waikaremoana 70km (thats 180km from Taupo - pack extra gas if you've got a small tank)Waikaremoana - Wairoa 60kmWairoa - Journey's End 160kmJourney's End Station - Matawai 30kmMatawai - Opotiki 75kmAlso check out the thread in the Adv section for more info & BS: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...-1-August-2010
