Haven't been away since the RAG so we’ve been looking forward to this for days. We had decided to make a long weekend of it some time ago so on Friday we were able to enjoy a fine winters day to ride down through the Waikato and over the Kaimai's to Omokoroa. After a good soak in the hot pools we cleaned up to go for dinner. A good crowd of early arrivals from as far away as Wellington,Whangarei, Whanganui and Hawkes Bay (sorry if I've missed any other regions) joined some local members for a pleasant evening in the local Yacht Club to set the tone for the weekend. Norma and Ken even arrived at the camp with the van to ferry us to dinner, thanks guys.Saturday dawned wet and miserable causing some to rearange the furniture to give their bike a dry place to overnightbut didn’t deter us from another good soak in the pools before breakfast, then into the gear and on to the bike for a trip to the Mount to visit Ray Holmes at his shop to chat and have a look around. Always a warm welcome at Mount Motorcycles and a good array of bikes and goodies to look at. Off then for lunch before taking the long way back to the camp via Bethlehem to pick up some of the best pies in New Zealand. Not so... the queue was far too long for us so we have put it on the list for our next visit when things may have cooled down a little. As usual Clive and Jean and their band of helpers put on a good show. Beer tasting set the tone for the evening until a fine roast meal was presented by the local school committee and devoured by the 65 or so hungry OR members. Jean had baked a special birthday cake to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the GS model. The prize for the pick of the bunch of the GSs there went to Paul Edlington for his lovely R80GS although there were a few really nice air head models to pick from. And of course there were 4 or 5 1200GSs to add to the fleet.Prizes for all manner of obscure reasons were handed out with much laughter and some micky taking. After dinner we were treated to a short talk by John Glaswell from BMW to update us on the latest from BMW. Sloan Frost then gave us in interesting talk on the BMW super bike that he is racing with some success. We will watch his progress with interest. As well as the S1000RR we had the HP2 there to drool over, both awesome machines. The ride home was a mixture with a couple of nasty squalls coming through, one between Paeroa and Ngatea which made me think of my sailing days in Wellington, we’d have been down to a number 3 jib and a couple of reefs in the main. As it was we just hunkered down, changed down into 5th and muscled in to it as it hit us on the port bow. Funny because when we got home the local Sunday racing was taking place and sure enough they were running very little sail as they close hauled up the harbour. Thanks all, see you at the AGM maybe?Malcolm and Jean
