Set out from Westgate somewhat late, bikes just kept turning up (hint here for the future, people: if the notice for the ride says OTD, it means “On The Dot”, and we won't be hanging around for you) but it was only a little baby ride today, so that didn't matter. Took the usual Riverhead Forest way north, but went via Helensville to Kaukapakapa, just to take a break from Peak Road for one weekend. Lost most of the go-fast riders at Kaukapakapa, presumably they went elsewhere to play at being real motorcyclists. Those of us in the "Social Touring Party" followed UncaMoose, aeromodeller himself, and past President of the South Auckland Club, to a display day on the Pony Club Paddock at Wainui. I thought we would be in and out like rats up a drainpipe, but I think all of us enjoyed the hour we spent looking at other people enjoying THEIR passion. Some amazing models, a far cry from back in the day when I used to hang a .125 cu in glowplug motor on a model and think it was serious power compared to rubber band flying. Some of these beasts had 3.4m wingspans, and 130 or more cc multi-cylinder engines. Gas or electric, most of them seemed to have enough grunt to hang off the prop or do very slow knife edge passes, and the degree of skill of the guys driving them was O for awesome. Well found, UncaMoose.(There are more photos at: http://is.gd/b33bq)In my case, reluctantly left the models behind, and headed up to Snell's Beach for another outstanding pub-grub meal at the Salty Dog. The staff are very welcoming to bikers, service is good, and the tucker always very good, and I'm just talking about the bar food. The restaurant on the other side of the establishment moves everything up another gear, if you want to shout yourself to a sit-down meal. For an after-match function, most of us went from Snells Beach down to the old Fort Cautley at Narrow Neck to see how President Rob was getting on with the flag-waving for BMWOR at the Bikes BBQs and the Blues. Ably assisted by the Breigs and the Gibbonses he was doing pretty alright, which was good to see, as most of us were near heat exhaustion after crawling through the usual Lake Road bottleneck to get there. And then, for the after-after-match the hard core tail enders wound up at the Red Baron house in Western Springs, where Kerry was a welcoming hostess, really gracious of her after spending the day looking after her dear old and wrinkly Dad, instead of enjoying a great day out on the bike like the rest of us. Onya, Mrs Red Baron.
