Any auto electricians out there ? I need some help !!My 96 r1100r has been sat idle for a month or so, fired up fine last use then and rode like a dream. It is permanently plugged into a battery maintainer / charger when not in use. Just went to fire it up and discovered a problem. Lights horn indicators etc work fine, headlight v bright and horn indicators work fine with it on high beam. Go to press the start button and nothing. However put the bike in gear and a noise like a servo (fuel pump ?) can be heard, (the fuel tank is full). Pull the clutch in when in gear press the start button and the starter tries but fails to engage, making a rather unpleasant noise. I put a multimeter on the battery and it read 12.57 voltsAny ideas ?

You could try to clean the terminals and the earth connection.

How old is your battery? These Gel batteries can die very quickly. I am guessing that what you hear is the starter relay. There is a battery for sale on trademe at the moment  http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=236273138 this might be a cheap way to fix your problem.

hi – sorry to hear of your experience which sounds like a recent experience I had with my 02 GS and a BMW battery fitted less than 2 years ago. Michael D (the original good guy imo when it comers to beemer mechanics) checked the battery and found this to be the problem. It was replaced under warranty – the BMW battery warranty that is – best wishes S

$763 gone just like that  😡 Just replaced the starter on my 1100gs due to another Aquatic misadventure  :-o. There were 2 in the country so you should be lucky  😀My old starter motor was only 14 months old and has a broken front housing. All the electrics are fine (it still spun over but wouldnt stay meshed with the ring gear). It could be yours for a couple of hundy plus frieght if you can use it to repair your starter.

Glad you found the problem, you can have them reconditioned. Perhaps you can even give it a clean-up yourself.http://www.largiader.com/tech/valeo/
