Hi all, I'm a newbie to this list although I have owned a R100CS for the last 20 years. I have just brought a 2002 R1150R and really like it, except…. for the stifled exhaust note. I had Staintune mufflers on the R100CS and it preformed and sounded great! Are there baffles or spark arrestors in the standard muffler that can be removed for improved exhaust note/performance? Does replacing the Catalitic Converter for a Y pipe improve exhaust note and performance?Staintune list a SFi 1032 Fuel Injection Control Unit, but doesn’t list much technical info. Do they make a difference and or what is the difference between that and the BMW ‘performance chip’.Any advice or recommendations will be appreciated.

A Y-pipe will improve the sound, as most of the muffling seems to happen in the collector box. A straight through pipe will also sound a bit better. Take the muffler off and listen to it then, it's louder but not unpleasantly so. If there is an easy way to clean out the muffler I'd also like to know about it. I just can't get myself to spend any money on something that's not broken and will not bring a tangible performance improvement. If you are not attached to the cat for environmental reasons it would probably be the best option, as it appears that aftermarket pipes will be frowned on soon.
