    Hi allAs you may see in the new member section I have arrived from SA and have brought my Dakar with. I have tried to get it legal for the road but VTNZ have failed me in a dented front rim. A new one costs $700 and as I am still living off SA Rands (R6 = $1) I find it a bit steep at the moment. I have tried to source a second hand one but to no avail. So finally I have had to park my bike and will be unable to ride. Is there anyone that could help in some way 😥

    Hmm, there are a few Dakars around.  Maybe a kind soul would loan you their good wheel long enough for you to pass your test.  I've got a 21in wheel for a KTM, but I don't know if it would fit - brake disc, axle, spacers etc.How bad is yours?  Is it unsafe?  A 4-pound hammer and a block of wood used to do the trick for my old XL125DTY

    Hi DaveTheYankI was hoping some-one would loan me a front wheel but was afraid to ask not knowing the country. If the wheel is not perfectly round they will fail me again so I think it would be best to get an undamaged one. I will source one eventially from SA as they are cheaper there but for now I cant ride. As far as unsafe goes, I got the ding on my very first ride and the bike has done 35000km since then with 2 front tyre changes so in my opinion it is not unsafe. I tried to explain this to the tester but to no avail.Thanks for your offer but I dont think the wheel would fit

    theres a good shop in cambridge that can usaually straighten rims for around $200

    you can get the rim straightened by adjusting the spokes. If it has a dent try the guy in cambridge, or the judicious use of a block of wood etc.

    Took the bike to a shop in Manakau city and was told it is not possible to get it perfectly round therefore not worth it. Where in Cambridge is this guy, perhaps I can pop in and speak to him?

    I had the same problem, chucked the BMW rim away and fitted an Exell rim for $300, better quality and much cheaper.

    I took a R100 GS rim to a member of the Vintage bike club here in Hamilton. It was really buckled. The GS rims can not be straightened due to having the spokes on the outside. Cambridge outfit above agreed could not fix. Anyone the vintage bike club member whom specializes in fixing rims re drilled the rim so it was like normal bike and put new spokes in. The thing was straight as straight but you had to use a tube. The tools and skills and skills he has are amazing. He also makes wooden rims for cars.I a currently considering taking my GS rims to him and getting him to lace up new black rims with pretty stainless spkes to make the bike more asthically appealing.can get contact details if you want as I suspect he would be your best bet. The guy is a artistRecently saw a article about him in a bike mag, think it was the bike rider mag out of Waihi

    I a currently considering taking my GS rims to him and getting him to lace up new black rims with pretty stainless spkes to make the bike more asthically appealing.

    That would look pretty and you'd never have to clean them  😀

    TRY this guy in auckland    dont know any history of this one but worth a try.OR TRY Craig at Hamco industries  06 3248345  or  0272317864, been around for years if it can be done he can do it!!

    I can highly recommend Tom at Wheels and Spokes…..he rebuilt my 1150GS wheels for me after I got the rims anodised, the rest of the world claim the GS wheels are nigh on impossible to rebuild except at the original factory, Tom did mine good as new. He is also highly knowledgable as to what fits what, what works and what doesn't. Wouldn't go anywhere else tbh!

    Thanks guysGot hold of Tom at Wheels and Spokes and he will fit an excell rim. Just for information the spokes have to be replaced when fitting an excell rim due to the larger holes in the excell rim
