😕Hi thereI see that my F650GS (as do all I guess :?) has a 12v power socket, but of course I read somewhere that these are different in size to the standard 12v cig plug on most items?Is there somewhere I can buy one of these plugs? And is there anything else I need to know about these? (e.g does the power feed shut off when the key is off etc etc)Also I read that you can use them to charge the battery up (when connected to a trickle charger), is this also correct?Sorry if it is such a nooby question 😳Regards Scott

You will need an adapter if you have items with the cigarette lighter plug. You can use it to hook up a trickle charger for the battery. The plug is on with the ignition off, at least that's the way it is on my GS. I use it with an el cheapo electric pump from the wharehouse to pump up the tires. It is useful to have.

Hi Scott,Off the top of my head I can think of two places that you can get the plugs and sockets.Firstly, you could go to your friendly BM dealer ... 😮Or you can get them from GOOD auto part dealers (forget Repco!). Aparently they are a standard Hella part, and there are lots of Hella pattern parts availible too.If Tony S (the turn-coat 😉 ) shows his face, he sourced them in NZ I believe. I got my spares from a mate who worked at the Komatsu earth mover plant in the UK.I hope that helps.

Hi ScottI got one from Experience, and it IS a Hella part. I haven't used it yet, it's still in the packaging. So if you haven't sourced one by the time I get home tonight, I will have a look and get you the Hella description and part number. Maybe even a photo!The wierd thing about it is that if you have a standard cig lighter end on your accessory, you will have to cut it off and attach this BMW unit, as the bike socket is smaller. But once you have wired it up, the new plug comes with an adaptor to size it back UP to a standard cig lighter socket. So it's not really an adaptor in the traditional sense, you'll need one of these for every accessory you want to use with the bike.Unless you make a pigtail with a female cig lighter socket wired to the BMW plug. Sounds big and cumbersome though.Dave

I got spare 'BMW' sized plugs and sockets from Western Auto for the plugs electrical for the sockets and in Henderson at a fraction of the BMW price. Go to hella.co.nz and click on 'resellers' for a list of dealers. Part numbers are 4918 for the sockets and 4914 for the plugs

Thanks all, I went and purchased one yesterday 🙂Which part of the plug is positive? I would think they are the same as other 12v plugs and that the centre pin i the positive (+), but I would like to check or is the ouside metal strips the (+)?Just have to find a weatherproof cig plug now to plug my GPS into 😉Regards Scott

Here is a copy of a post I put on UKGSer.com and ADVrider.com Hope it helpsIf you are in NZ or OZ and are looking to buy a plug for the BMW accessory socket then Jaycar (www.jaycar.co.nz) stock these Merit plug NZ$5.90 Cat No PP2090 and panel sockets and adaptors. I have just bought one so I can put my bike on a trickle charger over the winter months. I also bought a panel socket as mine is getting a bit tired. I dare say they are a lot cheaper than from the dealer and are in stock.
