Hi there. Thinking about getting back on a bike after 15 years off. Looking at a 1993 BMW R1100RS. Have tried 650gs (OK?). Can anyone tell me what they are like any possible problems. Loking for a good bike for sunday cruise and the occasional weekend away.

Welcome to the forum. I don't know of any specific problems with the R1100RS, of courses this doesn't mean they don;t exist. Remember they bike is now approaching 13 year of age, and as you may know teenagers can be problematic  :-D.  If I remember correctly this was the first year of the new engine, they have made subtle improvements over time. For this reason it is usually better to go for the latest model you can afford. Problems that do creep up are, leaking final drives, worn clutch splines and I suppose the odd one with ABS probelms.  It very much depends on how well the bike has been looked after. I am sure others will chime in who have actually owned one of the earlier bikes. Cheers,Alex

Many thanks. I realise that it is getting  a bit long int he tooth. It is an English import into NZ and has done 41000km. It is in excellent condition and seems pretty good for the age. I would like a 2000 or later model but budget retraints limits funds.

Condition is what counts. Are those miles or kilometres? It's only just run in at 41000km. Do your own service and you'll find it cheap to run. I've just replaced my front brake pads, and they are expensive. Have a look what they're like on the bike and how old they are. If they're the first set I would consider replacing them. Is it making any funny noises in neutral that go away when you pull in the clutch?Otherwise it's a neat bike and you should have a lot of fun with it. Has it got pannier?Cheers,Alex

No bike does not have panniers unfortunatly. Only problems stated from owner is that there is slight wear in the gear box spline and slight chattering when clutch is out but states that it is a common problem and shouldn't cause any hassels. Also reserve fuel light stays on and guage reads low. Recons it can be re set at next fuel filter change. Odo is in KM and states other than those two faults is in top condition.

Those splines are expensive to repair. I would suggest that you get a quote from a BMW workshop. He has no way of knowing how bad the splines are. When they let go the bike has no more drive and you'll need a trailer.  Once you've bought it the splines should not cause him any more hassles. If the the bike came from the UK the speedo should be in miles. Can you be sure that the 41000km is accurate? If the price of the bike has the cost of potential repairs factored in it may still be a good deal, especially if nothing goes wrong for a while. However, the history of the bike seems to be a bit murky, make sure you have it checked by someone who knows them.

have been in contact with BMW dealer/service agent and they state that it sounds like. Thrust big end bearring in gear box abot 1000dollars to  repair. is it still a good deal at 6500.

At least you have a better idea of what's coming your way. Has  the dealer seen the bike and listened to it? The price sounds good, but cheap vehicles can often be more expensive. Unfortunately, I have learned that more than once.
