Anybody have any idea as to how many GS owners are out there in NZ ? Very few frequent this forum or others. I belong to both the UKGS and AdvRider forum and find the postings very informative particularly with regard technical/accesories/troubleshooting. Very few NZenders post in the regional forum (Aus/NZ) on AdvRiders which is a little disappointing particularly when you consider the awesome back country rides we have in this country.
Personally I know very few GS owners in Hawke's Bay region and invariably do most of my backcountry riding on my own.
Not that I am complaining just find it a little odd that riders in this country seem so disinterested (or perhpas have their own groups). Perhaps I am wrong and just looking in the wrong places (flame me if you like)
BTW I am not a major off road rider/competitor - just someone who enjoys going off the beaten track and exploring the back country often with my wife as pillion. Every weekend.
What terrifies me the most about riding narrow backcountry roads, and curbs my speeding, in NZ is the farmer/shearer/etc speeding around tight corners on the narrow roads ! Kamikaze drivers.

Hi Richard and welcome to the site. It will take time for this forum to take off. What I have found is BMW bikes are very expensive for the average Kiwi and having a small population and only 200 BMW bikes are sold a year in NZ, with a great amount of those sales are bike hire companies. I have also found not many GS owners like to get there bikes dirty.

Now you have found the site keep posting and there will be others who will join in time. 😀

    Hi Richard,
I agree with Dean, there aren't that many GS riders who like to get the bikes dirty. A lot more people ride the smaller Off-road bikes as they are a lot easier to handle. You should come up to Auckland for the Kaipara 200 on Labour weekend.

    Cheers,
    Alex

    Hi Richard
Down here in Nelson there are about a half dozen or so of us with R1200GS. Considering their price and the fact there is no BMW shop in the upper south island this isnt too bad.

Thanks for all the replies. I do understand they are expensive and there probably are not that many around – all the pity. There are just so many beautiful back country roads to explore – magic scenery. Hell my GS is always dirty – just rinse it off quickly after a dusty ride. Made to get dirty – whats the point of owning one otherwise.

I will add this forum to ones I hang around and check it regularly. I am quite keen to participate in the South Island Adventure Tour in late January - sounds pretty awesome - I havent' toured S Island on a bike yet. Earlier this year my wife and I toured Nothland up to Cape Reinga etc - awesome. All the back roads too.

    Cheers
    Richard
